If you are writing about a single film it must have been made before the year 2000. If you are writing about a director, they should have been significantly active in the film industry before the year 2000.  If you are writing about a genre or film movement you will need to cite films, primarily made before the year 2000. 

The paper is more than a plot synopsis or historical biography.  You need to talk about your subject in the context of the history of film.  Why is your topic important?  What has been the influence?
