POST 1:
- Explain the role that Chapter 3 plays in the research proposal.

Chapter 3, the research methodology, plays a very important role in the research proposal. This chapter describes our plan for conducting our research. It will include what data we plan to collect and how we plan to collect it. This will help us eventually transition into chapter 4, where we can analyze the data and then chapter 5 where we can develop conclusions and recommendations.

My primary research question and sub-questions are listed below, I will list the categories and characteristics of the data I will need to collect underneath each one.
What factors are causing a decline in youth participation in Church services and low youth-to-adult continuance at Shepherd’s Gate Church? What steps can be taken to increase both attendance and continuance?
I will require statistical data which shows the detailed attendance rates for the church, to demonstrate the problem. My sub-questions will explore the steps that can be taken to help solve the problem.
To what extent are church-related factors (environment, location, people, leadership, etc.) causing a decline in youth participation in church?
In my survey, I will separate different church-related statements (environment, location, people, leadership, etc.) with a scale answering system to observe the extent of the church-related factors on the problem.
To what extent are cultural factors (negative perceptions towards the role of religion, negative media portrayals of youth who attend church, music lyrics that promote unchurched behaviors, etc.) causing a decline in youth participation in church?
Same as above, except for cultural factors.
To what extent are family and home factors (income, divorce, non-traditional families, etc.) impacting youth participation?
Same as above, except for family and home factors.
How has the decline in youth participation impacted youth-to-adult continuance?
I am not quite sure how to tackle this one, I am looking for suggestions.
What other factors have contributed to a decline in youth-to-adult continuance?
This will be an open-ended question in my survey, to allow for the identification of other factors that I may not have considered.
What actions can Shepherd’s Gate take to increase youth attendance and foster youth-to-adult continuance?
Same as above, but I will also provide suggested actions that will have a scale to indicate their level of effectiveness.
What role should adoption of social media and other youth-oriented technologies play in addressing youth interest and participation?
I will identify different types of social media and have a scale to indicate their impact.

POST 2:
Chapter 3 will act as the area where you will conduct studies and look at data and analyze it for research purposes. The type of data I would need to collect from this is answers to pointed questions about jobs that people will be doing as well as just letting people talk about their own jobs. I will also need to collect facts like job descriptions and people’s skill sets. With all this data I will be able to formulate information to be used for research. Interviews that are face to face is going to be the best way for me to do this. I think scaled questions will be a part of what I can be asking but mainly I think I will start off with questions already written and then will be able to ask follow up questions all based on what is told to me. I do not think I am going to need permission as much as I am just going to need people to get me the information. One weakness I see in it is the ability to be able to get a good sample from everyone across the unit. I think the workplace testing methodology is the one that will have the most to do with what I will be trying to gather.

Chapter 3 explains the methodology and typology for the research and the associated data. Additionally, it may explain how data will be collected, treated and analyzed as it relates to the research topic. Within Chapter 3 an explanation will be given as to what type of an analysis was utilized, either qualitative, quantitative or both. If surveys were utilized to gather data, this section will delineate they type of survey and note any specific considerations that were utilized for the survey along with other methods of abstracting data. Limitations to the data will also be outlined within Chapter 3.

In general, the majority of my data is quantitative. The data required for my sub-problems are very numeric, easily defined variables to which statistical analysis lends itself easily to deductive reasoning. My research problem is below:
What inefficiencies cause the helicopter training squadrons to have difficulties completing a Student Naval Aviator in the MPTS curriculum within 29.6 weeks and what actions can be taken to correct the inefficiencies to improve the time in which students complete the curriculum.

Chapter 3 signifies a transition from previously known information to original research performed by the author. It focuses on research methodology, which provides a plan of how, why, what, and when to perform the research. It requires data, sources, and methods to answer the research problem.

The data needed for my research problem is that of turnover rate in medical assistants, educational background information, opinions of medical assistants and mangers, data about lead medical assistant pay structures, and lastly data about similar positions to lead medical assistant specialist. This will all culminate together to provide the data needed to answer the primary research question.

I will request to have interviews with various health center managers, assistant health center managers, lead medical assistants, medical assistants, and quality assurance personnel as well as distribute surveys. These will be held face to face. Since UMHS is a public company data can be found out about pay scale of medical assistants, as well as, a pathways chart to show positions they could apply for and I can compare the salary scales.
Why is it important, if you are doing interviews to include scaled questions (1-to-5, for example) in the interview?
By scaling the interview questions it will help to sort the data, make it specific to one’s purpose, and will help limit the data of any phenomenon so that it can be interpreted and compared to a standard.
Do you think you need permission to collect your data and are you certain that you will be able to get permission when the time comes to actually collect it?
I would always retrieve permission to acquire data when conducting interviews. I am not absolutely certain I will be able to, but there are a number of managers and medical assistants I know so if someone is not comfortable I will be able to ask another person. I am hopeful that this research will help the individuals so I am not expecting a large amount of resistance, but will float the idea out to the managers to discover their feelings.
What limitations do you think will exist in your study? It is important to self-disclose any weaknesses so think about your study and list potential limitations that will impact the usability of the final results.
I can definitely see bias if anyone may feel slighted. I will have to carefully design my questions. This is a people study, and managers manage differently and staff reacts differently so it would be best to interview many sites to get a more appropriate understanding of the population.

Records (what records, containing what data)? Chapter 3 is the research methodology that outlines a plan for collecting the data to answer your primary (and secondary) research questions. It is a detailed section of how exactly you are going to collect this information.
My main research question is “Why is the freshman retention rate at UT so low and what can be done to raise it?†In order to answer the primary research question the following series of secondary-questions will be investigated:
1.What psychological factors are influencing the freshman retention rate?
2.What social factors are influencing the freshman retention rate?
3.What financial factors are influencing the freshman retention rate?
4.What institutional factors are influencing the freshman retention rate?
5.What actions can UT take to raise the freshman retention rate?
I envision using surveys and collecting data/records from the university to answer my research questions. I will need to get demographical information as well as physiological information from students enrolled in the University of Toledo as a biology major within the last three years.
Why is it important, if you are doing interviews to include scaled questions (1-to-5, for example) in the interview? Open ended questions can become too cumbersome and difficult to interpret. It is important to give participants a scale to rank their answer and allow them an opportunity to explain it. The value that is placed on the answer can be more easily compared to other answers during the interview process.
Do you think you need permission to collect your data and are you certain that you will be able to get permission when the time comes to actually collect it? I will need to get permission to collect the data for my research as it will involve sending surveys out to students and possibly gathering some information from the university. I have been in touch with the Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Toledo and we have arranged to meet to discuss my project in depth.
What limitations do you think will exist in your study? It is important to self-disclose any weaknesses so think about your study and list potential limitations that will impact the usability of the final results. My study will be limited to the Department of Biological Sciences to make the dataset manageable for the 16-week time period. That being said, my conclusions will not be able to be extrapolated to other departments or the whole university. The University of Toledo has a work group focused on my problem and this study could potentially serve as a check-in to how the university has progressed in the last two years.
