Response #1

Public Health and Health Promotion

The CDC defines public health “is the science of protecting and improving the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection and control of infectious diseases” (2016).

The World Health Organization defines health promotion “is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It moves beyond a focus on individual behavior towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions” (2016).

Similarities and differences

The similarities of public health and health promotion both are pushing for individuals to take better care of their health and by doing so getting the community involved. The differences is health promotion helps reduce excess mortality, address the leading risk factors and underlying determinants of health, helps strengthen sustainable health systems, and places health at the center of the broad development agenda (WHO, 2016). While, public health is concerned with protecting the health of entire populations, for instance these populations can be as small as a local neighborhood, or as big as an entire country or region of the world (CDC, 2016).

Health Promotion Activity

Keeping Kids Active is a health promotion activity in my community in which different leaders in the community came up with to keep children activity while out for summer vacation. This program offers youth to come to the local YMCA and play basketball. This program was to energize and mobilize children in the community to become active and take pride in the way they treat their body. The program over the year have been a major success and over the past year it has help over hundreds of youth in different areas of their life. Obesity is now better control and weight of the youth has gone down as well.

Healthy People 2020

Healthy People 2020 develop about three decades ago to improve the health of all Americans. “Healthy People has established benchmarks and monitored progress over time in order to: Encourage collaborations across communities and sectors, empower individuals toward making informed health decisions, and measure the impact of prevention activities” (2016). Over all, the program is design to help all Americans get healthy and stay healthy.

Legislation/ Interest Group

The health reform has had the most impact on the way health care is provide. “With the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), millions of people have greater protection against losing or being denied health insurance coverage, and better access to primary and preventive services” (ANA, 2016). By this law being passed many of people now don’t have an excuse of being healthy and taking better care of themselves. “Most people are now required to have health insurance, or pay a penalty that starts at 1% of income (or $95, whichever is greater) for the 2014 tax year, and go up to 2.5% of income (or $695, whichever is greater) by 2016” (Moffit, Haislmaier, Morris, 2013). The American Nurses Association has been advocating for health care reforms that would guarantee access to high-quality health care for all.

Wellness Program

Healthy eating had the greatest impact on the people of the U.S. in the last three years. “These findings provide insights into the potential effectiveness of alternative media interventions to counteract the unhealthy influence of television on diet, including nutrition education, parental communication and media literacy education to teach children to defend against unwanted influence, and reduced exposure to unhealthy messages” (CDC, 2011). The reason why this had an impact on me is because eating healthy was not the way that I used to do in which, I had in my mind that eating healthy did not taste good. Must say that since this program I have had better blood pressure reading and also have now maintain a healthy weight. School age children and also the teachers and staff was involved in this program. The reason why they were involved is because the obesity levels are high among the children. I think that by getting the community involved and the parents will help slow down the rate for obesity children around the community.
