What i have written for as my proposal: For my final paper, my leading topic idea would be how poetry gave a voice to the oppressed and more specifically the black community during a period of racial inequality and segregation. The poet of focus on this topic would be Langston Hughes and how his poetry helped spark a sense of community and spread the ideas of equality among people. Some of his work even shed light on the atrocities that the black community during these times which forced his audience to feel what it is like to be on the receiving side of such violence and dehumanization. Langston Hughes work was like a bridge between races which ultimately helped propel him to be a respectable and loveable man in his community, while being understood and acknowledged by the oppressors. He has quite a few poems that have to do with lynching which I can analyze and do close readings on to pinpoint specific techniques that he uses to highlight specific cultural elements and themes. I will discuss his role in the Harlem Renaissance and what that meant to not only the black community but the poetic community as well.
Other information: Rubric- For an A; Strong introduction that does not use a general statement(s)about poetry, parts of poetry, or the poet to introduce the subject. Thesis statement articulates an actual specific theme, does not simply say that it exists. Proposes a thesis that concerns specific patterns or habits in poet’s writing. Body paragraphs and each has a subject. Well-written with good sentence variation (doesn’t use the same sentence pattern several times in a row). Transitions to help the reader understand what you’re emphasizing. MLA formatting is correct. Paraphrased information is cited correctly as are of course quotations. At least 35-50% (ish) of paper is close reading of specific poems. 0-6 mechanical errors.
