‘Why Do You Want to Be a Nurse?’ Essay

Doing a course in nursing is something I have always been interested in from a very early age and I have always seen nursing as quite a challenging but simultaneously a rewarding career that you can be proud of while telling about your children, parents, or neighbors. Throughout my life I have been meeting all kinds of people in poverty, may it be a child in need, elderly, or even the disabled. I once had the opportunity to feed the homeless and it really began to make me think about how rewarding it was to give back to those who need your help. Thus, I chose to study nursing because I like doing good things for different people to make them feel better. It gives me the opportunity to combine providing help to people with both physical and mental health issues. Throughout all my years of schooling, I have been finding the functions of the human body and the effects of drugs on humans to be of much interest to me; therefore, I have strived to find a career which would fit that criterion. At the same time, I also found passion in serving those in need of help, whether it be from illness, or even as simple as assisting others in their everyday activities. Typically, these factors would often lure a person towards being a doctor or even a physician, who make highly desirable amounts of income. However, for me, it’s about more than just money; it’s about promoting health, preventing disease, and educating the public.

The field of nursing has long interested me because I find myself very compassionate about providing care to sick people. Ever since I was an eight-year child I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare because nearly my entire family did. My great-grandfather was a doctor, my grandmother was a nurse, and both my mother and father are pharmacists. With my parents being some of the most influential people in my life, I wanted to follow in their footsteps and become a pharmacist as well. As I grew older though, I realized deep down that nursing was truly the career choice for me. Nurses are the individuals who actually get to interact with the patients involving their needs in all aspects. With that being said, I would like to have the knowledge to know what the patient might be suffering in order to take immediate action towards their health and well-being. I am aware that the training required to become a nurse is challenging, but my dedication and hard work ethic, I know these traits will benefit me in my future.

As a current student, I have confidence in the abilities to be successful in this field because I interact well with others, I am very supportive and I have good communication skills. My future goal is to pursue a career in the NHS which is one of the best healthcare systems in the world and work in a good environment which will appreciate my efforts.

An area of nursing that I am very interested in the most is mental health nursing, a field which requires plenty of patience to succeed as it deals with people with challenging behaviors like stress and a disability. Reading what people like Ken Kesey and Jeffrey Masson had to say about the mental health institution was also an eye-opener for me as I was able to see how much the sector has evolved from how it was in the past to how it is now. To further my understanding of mental health nursing, I spent the summer working in Covadis which is a mental health center in my area which looks after people battling all types of mental health problems. Mental health nursing has illustrated to me how life changing due to my experience working with people with challenging behaviors at Covadis. The experience I had working over there with such experienced people further fuelled my desire to complete my studies and have a career which helps make a difference in people’s lives. What is the most important, I grew as a person because of the practical skills and knowledge I gained during my short time over there.
