INSTRUCTIONS:

Part 1: Pre-Assessment

Continue to observe the small group of students you identified in Topic 1. Based on your classroom observations, analyze the observational data and discuss the following questions with your mentor:

  • What important mistakes, struggles, or successes were apparent after the observations?
  • What patterns, trends, or gaps do you see related to literacy and the identified standard(s)?
  • What seems to be surprising or unexpected about student learning?
  • What are some strategies for helping students you have not explored?

Determine or develop an appropriate pre-assessment for the identified standards with your mentor and administer it to the small group of students. The pre-assessment should be focused, comprehensive, and provide the necessary data to guide your lessons based on the standards. Complete the “Pre-Assessment Description,” located in the LWS.

Following the administration of the pre-assessment, meet with your mentor to discuss the results and determine next steps of instruction, intervention, and evaluation. In the “Observation Analysis Data Summary with Mentor” section, describe how you collaborated with your mentor to develop, administer, and interpret the pre-assessment. Discuss how you worked together to interpret and use the data for decision-making about future instruction, intervention, and evaluation for individuals and groups of students.

Part 2: Mentoring

After you have administered your pre-assessment, share the results with your mentee. Discuss the process of creating a pre-assessment, how it was administered, and how you will use the data collected. Collaborate with your mentee in choosing or developing an appropriate pre-assessment for his or her small group based on a chosen literacy standard. Discuss how the mentee plans to implement the pre-assessment and use the data to drive future instruction.

Spend any remaining field experience hours providing literacy instruction and support.

In the “Reflection” section of the LWS, use the pre-assessment you administered to write a 250-500 word evaluation of the strengths and limitations of literacy and language assessments, including validity, reliability, and bias.
