Rogerian Argument

Using your notes, your textbook, and your own ideas, prepare a Rogerian Argument addressing the following:

Recall the last time you were in an argument in which there was a stalemate and no one seemed to win.

Go back to the discussion from last week where we provided examples from our personal lives, the workplace, and an educational setting. Choose one of those scenarios, or a new situation. Or, to keep current with the chaos in our society today, consider writing about whether or not life should go back to the normal before everything shut down, if the stay at home order should be extended, or whether or not we should be required to wear a mask when out in public. You can always think about your current situation, the amount of control you have over that situation, and what you can do/who you can convince to change it.

Write a 750 word letter to the individual with whom you are/were arguing, using Rogerian strategy. Remember to identify and address the position that is most unlike yours.

People who hold that view need to be able to agree that you have heard and understood them. Look for common ground with that other view. Use that common ground to describe contexts and conditions in which the opponent’s position might be valid. Do not show what is wrong with the other position. Now, write a transition that changes the subject to your position. Describe your position, and show the contexts in which it is valid. Finally, reconcile the two positions. Show how they can complement each other, how one supplies what the other lacks, and how everyone would benefit if elements of both were finally accepted.
